About Barefoot, Noah, Sr.
The name Barefoot is in British recorded history at least since 1093 when Edgar of Scotland was on the throne. The Norwegian King Magnus, surname Barefoot, succeeded him on the Western Isles and Kintyre. A Thomas Barefoot who arrived in Virginia was born in
England in 1616. A great deal of the Barfoots, Barefootes, Bearfoots, Barefoots, Burfoots, etc. in the American colonies in the 1600s were from Britain. They were in New England as well as Virginia. A large percentage of Barefoots in the south today can trace their
line back to Surry County VA and other James River Counties. The progenitor of many NC, SC, GA, and FL Barefoots descend from Noah Barefoot of Surry County. VA who died in 1710. His son John moved to NC and his known sons Jeptha, John, Noah lived in
and around the Edgecombe Co. area. Noah's sons Miles and John moved to Liberty Co. SC by the late 1780s. Although the name is not originally American Native, there is documentation that the Barefoots intermarried with Natives. One Noah had a child out of wedlock that was listed as Indian (in the 1850 census).
