Being only fourteen years old when the Civil War began, John did not enlist until 17 March 1864. By then the Confederacy needed new men and a 17 year old would do fine. He volunteered with Dance's Company of Virginia Artillery. On 24 July 1864 John was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond. On 9 August he was granted a forty day furlough. The son of William and Dorinda Taylor Aston never married. He lived with his nephew and worked as a prison guard in Goochland after the war.
