"Joseph Carter, Sr. was born near Richmond, Virginia, and died at Grassy Creek in Morgan County, Ky. His remains were laid to rest here amid the graves of his wife, Magdaline Chastain, his daughter, Judith Gevedon, and other relatives, but no one now living can point out the unmarked plot where his body was laid in its last lowly bed."

"Magdaline died and was buried among her people here in this plot of ground; and later her daughter, Judith Gevedon, my great grandmother, was laid by her side."

History of Carter Family At D.A.R. Unveiling Ceremony Told by J. M. [James Monroe] Gevedon, Licking Valley Courier, West Liberty, KY, June 11, 1953.
