According to Johnie Mulinax Johnson in her book "My Shelbys", Jacob Gurley first married Matilda Dyer in 1829. They had one son: James Thomas Gurley b. 1831 in Coweta, GA. After Matilda's death, he married Colleen Shelby in 1837 in Coweta, GA. "My Shelbys" also states that Jacob died in 1846 in Georgia and that he left a will and estate records in Carroll Co. GA and other records in Barbour Co. Ala. and that he is buried in a Gurley family cemetery in Georgia. Unfortunately, many of these old family cemeteries have been lost, are in sad disrepair, or the graves are unmarked or markers are no longer readable.

I found this information in a letter from Byron Gurley about the cemetery that Jacob was probably buried in.“I have found the David Gurley family cemetery at the end of the Doc Perry Road off the Sargent-Macedenia Road, by Delmos Perry’s house. Unfortunately, the cemetery was bulldozed away inadvertently some years ago in a road straightening."

Another Find a Grave member who is related to the Gurleys and lives in the Coweta area said: "The story about the Gurley Cemetery being pushed away when the road was repaired is most likely wrong. In my research I found the owner of a home moved the head and foot rocks from where he was building a house and piles them around his mail box. The cemetery would still be in the front yard in a patch of Oak trees."
