Margaret G. Seals, née Girton, 97, of Stillwater, formerly of Shickshinny, died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2016, at the Bonham Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Stillwater.

Born Aug. 14, 1919, in Shickshinny, she was the daughter of the late Dan and Eva (Hess) Girton.

Mrs. Seals graduated from the former Shickshinny High School (the valedictorian no less!) in 1937 and soon found herself in New York City, studying to be a nurse at the Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital.

The fall of 1939 changed Mrs. Seals' life forever, as it did for so many. She joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in January 1943 and served at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, attaining the rank of first lieutenant. Here she met the love of her life, Omar, who was a patient on her ward. When the war ended the two of them made their way to Pennsylvania, where they began a new life teaching and starting a family - a boy (Dan) and a girl (Julie).

Mrs. Seals obtained her English degree from Wilkes College in 1970 and began a teaching career at Northwest Area High School, where she retired in 1985.

Mrs. Seals continued, to the end of her life, to be a friend and mentor to many, dispensing knowledge and wisdom, often from her perch-of-choice, the porch swing.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Omar Seals, on Feb. 10, 1965, and her son, Dan Seals, on Aug. 27, 2001.

Mrs. Seals is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Deacon Milt Leppert, Manhattan, Ill.; her nephew and his wife and daughters, Michael, Lynn and Sarah Wilczynski, Shickshinny, and Isla Vogt, Pottstown; a niece and her daughter and son, Nancy, Amy and Mark Girton, Ohio and California, respectively; her daughter-in-law and husband, Zarine and John Kashatus, Harrisburg; and two grandsons, Dan Seals, Washington, D.C.; and Andy Kashatus, Pittsburgh.

A heartfelt thank you to Mrs. Seals' dear friend, Alice Lent, who kept the faith all these years.

And, especially, Mrs. Seals will be survived by her caretaker and friend, Joanne Chesnet, and her family, Benton. Joanne is an example of God's grace on earth.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the First Presbyterian Church, Shickshinny, with the Rev. James Parks officiating. Interment will be in Gettysburg National Cemetery. The service will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 50 N. Main St., Shickshinny, PA 18655, and/or the Activity Fund of the Bonham Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 477 Bonnieville Road, Stillwater, PA 17878.

Arrangements are under the direction of Mayo Funeral Home Inc., Shickshinny.
