Sarah was the daughter of Levi and Mary Elizabeth Haggard Casey, early settlers in Taney County and influential in Taney County's development. She married Henry H. Laughlin soon after the death of his first wife during the Civil War and lived with her husband on the Laughlin farm upstream from the mouth of Beaver Creek, south of Kissee Mills, for many years.

Sarah and Henry had four children: James Henderson, G. Belvia (Smithson), Rachel Ida (Gladson), and John Levi. Apparently living in Forsyth at the time of her death, Sarah resided just two miles from the cemetery that bore her family name and in which her husband directed his own burial in his will 30 years before.
