OBITUARY:

Springfield Twp, Clark Co, OH (unknown newspaper) published on 06 Jan 1873

Death of an Old Citizen. Archibald Mitchell, one of our oldest and most respected citizens, died at his residence on Yellow Springs street, on Sunday morning and the remains were taken to New Carlisle for interment today. Mr. Mitchell has been afflicted in various ways for some time past. Not long since he submitted to the amputation of one of his legs, with favorable prospects. Owing to his age and feebleness he was unable to rally however. Our aged men seem to be dropping off rapidly lately.

According to Mitchell family history, Archibald was one of seven children of Pomroy Mitchell and Margaret Van Metre, a niece of Daniel Boone. He and his siblings were born in Culpeper, Virginia, near Culpeper Courthouse.

After the early death of his father, Archibald's mother took her children west to Ohio in about 1808, with a party including the Forgy, Lamme, and Wallace families. The Mitchells lived first in Bath Township in Greene County, where Archibald's mother remarried to William McClure in 1810. About 1813, the family moved to Bethel Township in Clark County.

Archibald served as a Private in the U.S. Army under the command of Captain William Lamme in Dougherdy's 2nd Regiment of Ohio Militia, mustering out of Springfield, during the the War of 1812. His service took place during Sep-Oct 1813.

Archibald married Sarah Swigert on 5 Feb 1824 in Miami County, Ohio. They settled in Bethel Township in Clark County, where Archibald purchased 160 acres about 2 miles SE of New Carlisle (T3 R9 S16 SW 1/4) and founded a successful fruit tree grafting business, which enabled him to build a brick mansion in later years, and one of the largest barns in Clark County.

Fourteen children are known to have been born to this couple, all but one of whom (John Forgy Mitchell, 1826-1906) are linked to this memorial. Nine of their children survived to adulthood, including five sons who served in the Union Army during the Civil War.

After Sarah Swigert Mitchell's death, Archibald remarried to Sarah E. Rowse (1809-1864), the widow of Col. Zalmon Rowse, on 19 Feb 1856 in Crawford County, Ohio. No children are known to have been born to this couple.

After Sarah Rowse Mitchell's death, Archibald remarried again to Evaline Smith Weaver (1813-1879) on 12 Apr 1865 in Clark County, OH. They lived at the corner of Yellow Spring and Main St in Springfield, Ohio. No children are known to have been born to this couple.

Archibald is buried in the Mitchell family plot in New Carlisle Cemetery (formerly Honey Creek Presbyterian Church Yard, near his mother, brother, two wives, and several children. He left and extensive will, naming all of his surviving children, and the grandchildren born to the children who predeceased him.
