Willian King served in the American Revolution from Duplin Co., NC in the Militia from the Wilmington, NC District. See Revolutionary War Vouchers at NC Archives. After the Revolution he served as a member of the N.C. General Assembly representing Sampson Co., NC 1788,1787 & 1790 (NC Colonial & State Records Vol. 21 pg. 5,6,38 & 46). Sampson Co., NC was formed in 1784 from Duplin Co., NC which was formed from New Hanover Co., NC. (The Heritage of Sampson Co., NC Vol. I edited by Oscar M. Bizzell 1784-1984. Also see Vol. 2 pg. 463 entry #733).
William King was a son of Michael King III and Mary Snell, a daughter of Roger Snell,III and Ann Pickering ( from: William R. King and His Kin by Henry P. Johnson, Sr.)

The same contribute submitted that the William King son of Michael & Mary Katherine Smell King was born 30 Sep 1753 in Bertie Co., NC and died 23 Dec 1811 in Knox Co., KY and married Mary (Polly) Woodson.
William King(1755-1816) was a soldier in the American Revolution from Sampson Co NC. William King served in the NC House of Representatives from Sampson Co., N.C. in 1788, 1790, 1791 & 1792. Also listed in Dictionary of American Biography by Scribners Vol. X; Heirs Apparent by Young & Middleton Chapter XIII pg 141-2; History of Alabama & Dictionary of AL Biography by T. M. Owen Vol. III; Memorial Records of AL, vol 2 pg 1026.
On 28 Aug 1816, William King signed his Will in Sampson Co., NC. He names his wife, Margaret{DeVane} King. The following children are named in his Will:
1. Thomas DeVane King ( Not yet 21)
2. Margaret Devane (c. 1760 NC - p 1816 AL ) m. John Beck
3. Tabitha Kornegay
4. Helen King
5. Ann King
6. William Rufus King
7. DeVane King
Granddaughter Catherine M. Parrish
Appointed sons, Thomas D. King & William R. King and son in law John Beck to be Executors.

William King and Margaret DeVane King were married about c. 1777 and had at least 9 children:
1. Mary King (c.1778 - died infancy)
2.Thomas DeVane King (22 Sept 1799 -24 Feb 1854)m.Nancy A. Jones. Had son William Thomas King killed 1862 Battle of Manassas leaving 2 daughters & no sons.
3.Elizabeth Ann King (1780 -1800 ) m. William G. Parrish
4.Margaret King(14 Feb. 1783 - 8 Nov 1822 in childbirth) m. John Beck
5.William Rufus DeVane King (7 April 1786- 18 April 1853 ) Mem #1788 electd V. President of USA. Never married. His Will was probated 11 May 1853 Will Bk B pg 83 Dallas Co., AL. names many family members.
6.Tabitha King (1788 -21 July 1870) m. Basil Kornegay(1766-1822)
7. Helen Louisa King (15 Feb 1793 - 1856) m.Henry W. King
8. Catherine King (1795-1816) m.John Parrish (left a baby daug. Catherine)
9. John DeVane King (1797 -1833 Dallas Co., AL. ) never married. In his father's Will, he is referred to as DeVane. He left a Will in Dallas Co., AL Will Bk. A pg. 99-101 July 27, 1832 in which he refers to himself as John D. King. The Will names brothers Wm. R King, Thomas D. King, sister Tabitha Kornegay, Helen L. King & Catherine Parrish, a relative. J. D. King is found in the Alabama census of 1830. Evidently, both brothers, Thomas and John were given the middle name of DeVane.
After William King's death in 1816, his wife, Margaret moved from North Carolina to Alabama taking her mother, Mary Larkins Devane with her who was nearly 90 years of age.

Margaret's sons,William Rufus Devane King and Thomas Devane King had moved to Alabama when it was a territory. Later Wm. Rufus Devane King was one of their first Senators for the new state. Then later went on to be on the ticket with Franklin Pierce as Vice President running mate .
He had built a home there called "Chestnut Hill".
Margaret Devane & William King's daughter, Elizabeth Ann who married Wm. Parrish died in childbirth. The little girl was named Catherine Marie Parrish and was mainly raised by her grandparents. She is entered into her Grandmother, Margaret Devane King's Bible"...Catherine Parish, 10 years old, was born the 9th__? ..." This Bible is housed in the Department of Archives of Alabama given by Miss Alice King, (# 189417391) along with other King family artifacts. (Note: In November 2021, I visited the Alabama Department of Archives & History in Montgomery, AL. The Archives has a large collection of artifacts belonging to the King family and especially that of William Rufus DeVane King.).
