He was born Jan. 17, 1936 to James and Elnora Butler in Wharton, Texas. He later relocated to Lubbock with his wife Pauline Banks. He was known for being the first African American Disc Jockey in Lubbock.
He is survived by seven children, Freddie Butler Jr., Freddie Lee Butler, Jerry D. Butler, Betty Wilkerson, Carolyn Childress, Cheryl Butler, Stacey Mitchell, all of Lubbock; one brother, Alvin Butler of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; three sisters, Ina Mae Page, Annie Dial, and Willie Bea Dial, all of Lubbock; 21 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren, all of Lubbock. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife; and sister, Ester Curry.
