John C. Ashley, 58, former circuit judge, prosecuting attorney
and state senator and president of the Bank of Melbourne, died at the Barnes
Hospital in St Louis, Mo., early Thursday morning. About two years ago he
suffered a sudden break in health since which time he spent many weeks in
various hospitals.

He was born December 31, 1884 on a farm near Violet Hill. After
attending Melbourne High School in 1905-06, he entered the University of
Arkansas and received a B. A. degree in 1911. He was one of the top ranking
students. After teaching in the rural schools of Sharp, Independence and
Izard counties, he was principal of the Evening Shade High School two terms
and then attended Cumberland University Law School at Lebanon, Tenn. After
being admitted to the bar he opened offices at Melbourne.

Mr Ashley was elected state senator from Twenty-third district
in 1913 and served until 1917. He then was elected prosecuting attorney of
the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit and served three terms. He was circuit judge
in 1922, serving two terms. He made an unsuccessful race for Congress in
1930 and entered the governor's race in 1936, but withdrew before the
election. He served as a member of the State Forestry Commission under the
administration of former Governor Carl E. Bailey.

Mr Ashley owned considerable farm acreage in this county. He
served for many years as a member of the Melbourne school board.

He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Miss Catherine Ashley of
Melbourne; a son, Capt. John C. Ashley, Jr., with the army in North Africa;
a brother, William Ashley of Tuckerman; and three sisters, Mrs J. B. Smith
of Violet Hill, Mrs Edith Jacobs of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Mrs Cora
Johnson of Tuckerman.

Funeral services will be held at Violet Hill Sunday at 2 p.m., with Rev
Horace M. Lewis, pastor of the Methodist Church of Batesville and Rev R. E.
Lee, pastor of the Methodist Church at Melbourne, in charge. Interment will
be in Violet Hill Cemetery.
