John Olsen Fladvad was born on Wednesday, 11 December 1839 in Sunndal, Møre og Romsdal County, Norway, the son of Ole Olsen Fladvad (1804-1893) and Marit Evensdatter (Ottemsøyen) Fladvad (1805-1885), and he was christened at Romfo Kirke in Sunndal on Sunday, 12 January 1840. He was married to Marit Eriksdatter Gjøra (1844-1935), the daughter of Erik Fredriksen Gjøra and Christi Olsdatter (Ørsund) Gjøra (1802-1872) of Gjøra Farm: Ne'stua in the upper Sunndal valley, at Romfo Kirke on Thursday, 4 June 1868 and they had 11 children between 1869 and 1889. He took over Fladvad Farm nr. 5: Utigard in 1866 after his father, Ole Olsen Fladvad, and managed until his death in 1902. Highly respected in the Sunndal valley and a very intelligent and witty man, he was mayor of Sunndal, 1872-1885 and 1890-1891, respectively, and given many different public assignments and tasks. He died of cancer on Thursday, 8 May 1902 and he was laid to rest within the churchyard at Romfo Kirke in the village of Romfo in Sunndal on Wednesday, 14 May.
