Robert Payton "Toby" Foster, passed from this life at his home in Broken Arrow on Friday morning, May 30, 2014. Tobe was born in Velma, Oklahoma, on the 16th day of March, 1932, and was the youngest of nine children, given to James Albert and Janie P Foster, seven brothers and one sister. He was brought up around the Duncan, Oklahoma area and also spent considerable time in West Texas with his parents and siblings. Tobe married Peggy Sue (Roark) Foster July 3, 1952 in Wichita Falls, Texas and would have celebrated their 62nd year of matrimony this summer. The union produced two children, LuAnn and Neal Dean. The family settled in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma in the early '60s, where Tobe was a self-employed carpenter, working on the construction of many of the residences and businesses which were part of the area's population boom. He continued to work after retirement and even up until his recent decline in health. Tobe served in the United States Army from 1955 through 1957 stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Upon discharge, the family moved to Long Beach, California then to Neosho, Missouri, before settling in Broken Arrow. Tobe was a supremely patient man; he was easy to work with and for, quick to help others or to mentor those that wished to learn the trade. His talent and skill were well known by all that he worked for and those that worked around him. His calm demeanor and soft spoken personality belied his wry sense of humor; he was a meek and peaceful person who lived his life according to scripture's "golden rule." Tobe accepted Christ as his savior and was baptized in Duncan, Oklahoma at the 1st Baptist Church many decades ago; he since established membership at other churches through the years and remained faithful to the Gospel in word and deed and passed this heritage on to his children and grandchildren by his example. He and wife Peggy currently are members of Gloryland Baptist Church in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. During the many decades of residence in Broken Arrow, Tobe cultivated many friends whom he held in high esteem – in his later years, he enjoyed drinking coffee and meeting with others at a favorite diner, or a personal residence of a friend, or place of business. He enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys and the Oklahoma Sooners (occasionally the Oklahoma State Cowboys) and checking up on friends and acquaintances; he also enjoyed listening to live music, particularly bluegrass, especially that performed by his recently deceased nephew, Billy Joe Foster. Tobe is preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Janie Foster, his brothers Jim Foster, Jake Foster, Joe Foster, Frank Foster, Jack Foster; Virgil Foster, two sisters, Suede Nix and Mary Jane Foster; father and mother in-law Ernest and Jean Roark, brother-in-law Russell Thomas and granddaughter, Caroline Ann Cannon. He is survived by his wife, Peggy, of the home, daughter LuAnn Cannon and Greg Spahn of Broken Arrow, son Neal Dean and daughter-in-law Lisa Kay, grandsons Isaac Tobe and Niles "Pete", brother Matt Foster, sisters in law Rowena Foster and Billie Thomas along with many nephews, nieces and cousins of whom he held great affection. Tobe had a special place in his heart for his granddaughter, Caroline, his first grandchild, whom she dubbed, "Boppy." She was the apple of his eye and a constant companion until her untimely death at age 12 in 1995. His grandsons, Isaac and Pete continued to call their grandpa, "Boppy," following their cousin's lead. He was a mentor and gentle grandpa to all his grandkids, and was involved building tree houses, toy boxes, and other various and sundry activities, along with taking them to the park, to show off to his friends at the diner or place of business or house, or to Rooster Day when they were younger. Tobe has fought the good fight as described in scripture; he loved helping others; he was adored by his family for his character, his fidelity and his sweet countenance. He was a true friend to those that counted him as such, he was never known to complain of personal issues or to have a short temper; was indeed exemplary of the Saviour he followed. All in all, a gentleman. His hands were gentle, his hands were strong. His memory will be carried by all who held him in affection and he will be sorely missed. The family expresses gratitude to all that have given much to bring joy to Tobe these past few years, as he has to them- and wish that in lieu of flowers, donations in remembrance to St. Francis Hospice and/or Gloryland Baptist Church (18610 E 91st St S, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, 74012) be requested.
