Carl W. Bird Sr.
1927 ~ 2016
Midvale, UT-Carl W. Bird, Sr., beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend passed away on October 7, 2016.
He was born July 25, 1927 in Salt Lake City to Walter J. Bird, Sr. and Martha Peterson Bird. He was the youngest of three children. His sister Erma Jean Bird Cowan and brother Walter J. Bird are deceased.
Carl served in the Navy during World War II from March 10, 1945 to August 1, 1946 as
Seaman 1st Class aboard USS Ticonderoga and USS Kula Gulf. And in Active Duty during the Korean War October 5, 1950 to April 11, 1953 as Machinist Mate 3rd Class aboard USS Chemung.
Carl married Alta June Albertson September 3, 1948 and spent 61 years with his devoted companion and sweetheart until her death on March 31, 2010. Together they raised three sons. He worked for Mountain Fuel for 38 years as a mechanic.
He loved hunting and fishing and spending time with his sons doing those sports. The family's favorite getaway was their cabin in Lemon's Grove near Kamas. Carl was a strong role model for his sons. He taught them to honor their commitments, do their duty and to be responsible good men -to be the kind of man he was. He supported them in getting the best education possible.
Carl always had great jokes to tell, he was the life of the party, and he was generous with his time in helping others. He spent many hours fixing vehicles for others and opening his home when people needed a place to stay. He enjoyed his grandchildren and they have many fond memories of spending time at their grandparents' condo in Jeremy Ranch.
He loved going out on Saturday nights to the Eagles and dancing with his sweetheart. They took trips to gambling spots for mini vacations, they enjoyed many motor home trips with close friends, and they took several cruises making new friends wherever they went.
In his later years, even with many health problems and loss of his wife six years ago, he was still a stalwart presence to his family.
Thank you Dad, Grandpa, Great Grandpa and our good friend for all the love and support you gave to us.
Carl is survived by sons Carl Jr. (Linda), Jim (Stephanie) and Mike, five grandchildren- Brandi, Carrie, Andy (Julie), Ben (Michelle), Dakota and eight great-grandchildren-Chris, Anna, Kassie, Nicholas, Ashton, Jeremiah, Rachel and Corbin.
A viewing will be held Wednesday, October 12th from 6 to 8 pm and a Memorial Service on Thursday, October 13th at 1 pm with a viewing one hour prior at Redwood Memorial Mortuary 6500 South Redwood Road in West Jordan.
