Sandra F. (Shaffer) Hershey, 80, loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday afternoon, October 22, 2016

after a courageous battle with cancer. Her loving family was by her side. Sandra was the wife of Paul S. Hershey with whom she shared 61 years of marriage. Along with her husband, Paul,

Sandra is survived by one son, Douglas P. Hershey and his wife, Julia of York; one daughter, Beth A. Gross and her husband, Donald of York; two grandchildren, Amy (Gross) Hoff and Matthew Gross; and two step grandchildren, Molly and David Wolfe.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 839 W. Market St. with the Rev. Kevin T. Shively and the Rev. Keith Fair officiating. Burial will be private at St. Jacob's UCC cemetery in York New Salem. Heffner Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd., York, is in charge of arrangements.

Born on February 29, 1936 in Seven Valleys, Sandra was the daughter of the late Oscar Urias and Mary Jane (Aldinger) Shaffer.

She was a 1953 graduate of Spring Grove High School. Sandra had been employed by the Seven Valleys Garment Company and Lincoln National Life Insurance Company in Fort Wayne, IN. She retired in 2005 as a Postal Clerk with the U.S. Postal Service in Seven Valleys after 39 years.

Sandra was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church since 1959 where she was a part of "Christian Friends" Sunday School Class and Women of the E.L.C.A. Circle #4. She was also a member of Scattered Homemakers for over 40 years, a national and local (Moss Roses) member of the P. Buckley Moss Society, Susquehanna Valley Angels Collector Club, Windy Hill Senior Center, Jacobus Leisure Club, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, Hanover Garden Club, Women's Friendship Club of York, Spring Grove VFW Auxiliary and volunteered for Lutheran Social Services as a Hershey Park worker.

Sandra was a woman of quiet, yet strong faith. She devoted her life to serving family and friends, investing her time and effort helping others. She always knew the right thing to say to make others laugh and feel good about themselves. Her joyful spirit, compassion, and caring soul motivated others to say they wanted to be like her. Sandra lived her life according to the bumper sticker on her car, "Practice Random Acts of Kindness." She was known for remembering her family and friends with cards and special notes, even writing thank you notes for thank you notes. The backs of her envelopes were always stamped with a beautiful angel. She is now our angel in Heaven.

Our family would like to express a special thank you to the nurses and doctors at York Hospital, Hershey Medical Center, WellSpan Rehabilitation Hospital, and SpiriTrust Skilled Nursing and Hospice of York for their exceptional care given to Sandra.
