Services for Gerald Q. Fountain, age 94 will be held at 3:00 PM, Saturday in the Chapel of Townsend Brothers Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Dublin Memorial Gardens. Rev. Darren Talley will officiate. Visitation will be Saturday from 2:00 PM until funeral hour at the funeral home.
Mr. Fountain was the second of five sons born to Theo and Mae Fountain, was raised on a farm in Laurens County, attended church at Oak Dale and Baker Baptist Churches. He made his public profession of faith in Christ, was baptized in 1946 and was an active Christian wherever he lived thereafter. He has been an active member of Jefferson Street Baptist Church since 1952 where he worked with boys in “RA’s”, taught adult Bible Class in Sunday School for several years, was a member of the L.B. Roberts Bible Class where he served as Secretary and Treasurer, Assistant Outreach, Outreach Leader, and was an active member of this class until death.
Gerald attended Laurens County Public Schools at Baker, Cedar Grove, and Rentz, graduating from Rentz High School in 1942. He was an outstanding athlete in football and basketball, receiving Athlete of the Year award from Rentz High School upon graduation. He was a former member and past president of the Dublin Civitan Club. He was a former member of the Dublin Country Club where he was a challenging golfer. He was an active member of Green Acres Golf and Recreation Club.
He was a devoted husband and caregiver for each of his wives who preceded him in death, Avis Gay Fountain and Fay Weatherly Fountain. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Theo and Mae Fountain, brothers; Paul E. Fountain, and E. J. Fountain, and a son Roger Gerald Fountain.
After completing school, he continued farming and began part time as a Field Reporter for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, ASCS Division. After receiving discharge from short tour of duty in the US Navy, he again worked for USDA-ASCS serving as County Executive Director of this organization in Wheeler County. In 1952 he accepted Executive Director position in Laurens County. Under his leadership in 1957, the Laurens County ASCS Office received recognition as the most outstanding ASCS Office in the State of Georgia. Service to farmers was his first priority. He retired from USDA-ASCS in 1973 after thirty years service. He continued a small farming operation which he thoroughly enjoyed until 1994.
