Alexander was the son of Alexander and Isabella McBride McKnight, both of County Down, Northern Ireland. They migrated to Franklin County, Pennsylvania, in 1790. In 1795, they settled on what became known as the McKnight farm on Crooked Creek, Washington township, Indiana County, PA.
Alexander Jr., the younger of the two sons, wed Susannah Cummins on December 5, 1816. They lived on the farm until their deaths. They had two children: William C. McNight and James A. McKnight.
