Lois Ann Cowgill Burton of Tallahassee, Florida, passed peacefully in her own home surrounded by her family on Tuesday, September 13, 2016. She was 87. Lois was very close to her four children and their families. She loved reading, puns, gardening, crochet, and genealogy. She collected thimbles, bells and photos of her family. We will always remember her sparkly blue eyes and sweet smile.
She was born in Glenn Dale, MD to the late Perry Bogess Cowgill and Mary Bise Cowgill. She was the 9th of 10 children that grew up on a farm with a white picket fence, cows, chickens, fruit trees, a big garden and a root cellar.
She attended Bob Jones University, Greenwood, SC. She lived with her family in many Florida cities as well as Central America before settling in Tallahassee. She retired from the Division of Forestry. She also worked at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.
Lois leaves behind four children and four grandchildren. Her children are Karen Burton (Alec Thigpen) of Spanish Fort, AL, Sue Burton (Bill Bales) of Tallahassee, FL, Thomas R. Burton, III of Tallahassee AL, Patricia Burton (Mark Butsch) of Tallahassee, FL. Her grandchildren are Daniel Burton Bales, Michelle Burton Bales, Patrick Burton Butsch and Diana Burton Butsch. She is survived by her sister, Margaret Cowgill Mack of Greenwood, SC. She is pre-deceased by her brothers: John Benjamin Cowgill, Perry Parker Cowgill, William Henry Cowgill, Lee Chase Cowgill, Frank Eugene Cowgill and two sisters: Jane Cowgill Thomas and Edna Cowgill Hawes.
The family is especially grateful to the professional and caring staff of Covenant Hospice – Dr. Murphy and RNs, Rhonda, Patrice, and Jessica, as well as aides, social workers, and volunteers that supported our family through our mother’s last months.
A memorial service is planned for Oct 22, 2016 at Glendale Memorial Nature Park, Defuniak Springs where she is buried.
