Mr. Reed died at 7:30 a.m., October 18th at Carillon House after an illness.
He was born in Crosbyton, Texas June 14, 1928, to Elmer J. Reed Sr. and Julia Mae Carter Reed. He and his parents moved to Lubbock in 1935. He attended school in Crosbyton, and Lubbock and graduated from Lubbock High School in 1945. He attended Texas Tech University and The University of Virginia, and served in the U.S. Naval Reserve.
He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church, National Association of Postmasters of the USA, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and was a former member of the Southwest Rotary Club.
He and his wife, Rita Joyce McCauley, were married July 28, 1948 in Lubbock.
He retired after 38 years of service with the US Postal Service at Lubbock and was Sectional Center Manager/Postmaster at the time of retirement.
Elmer and Rita joined the Carillon Community in 2012.
Survivors include his wife, two sons, Brad Reed and wife Marsha, Brent Reed and Marianne Evola; four grandchildren, Benjamin Reed and wife Holly, Katie Crump and husband, Chad, Emily Reed and fiancé Cole Lidiak and Mackenzie Reed; two great grandchildren, Avery and Emery Crump. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Beth Reed Johnston.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Carillon Foundation or Cal Farley’s Ranch.
