Color Guard and Service Members Attend Rites at Tracy Lutheran Church

Memorial services for Pfc. Donald Dahl, who lost his life when an American convoy was sunk in the Mediterranean April 20, 1944, were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the Tracy Lutheran church of this city.

A color guard and members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion were in attendance for the memorial rites.

The Rev. Obrestad, pastor, was in charge of the service, and the Rev. C.S. Pedersen of Granite Falls gave the memorial address.

Donald Otis Dahl was born Feb. 23, 1923, at Tracy, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Otis Dahl. He received his early education and training in the Tracy schools and graduated from high school in 1942.

Before embarking for overseas service, he received military training at Shepherd Field, Texas, Lowry Field, Colorado, and the Fairmount army air field in Nebraska.

On April 30, 1944 notice was received by his family that he was missing in action. Later it was confirmed that he was killed in transport in the Mediterranean area. After close of the war, further information disclosed the sinking of the convoy ship by enemy planes with the loss of many lives on April 20, 1944.

The departed serviceman was 21 years of age, 1 month and 28 days.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Oscar Sorbel and foster-father, Oscar Sorbel of Tracy; also three brothers, Marion Dahl of this city; Orville Dahl, Los Angeles, Cal., and Jerome Dahl, student at Luther College, Decorah, Iowa. A step-sister, Goldie Sorbel and step-brother, Clair Sorbel, Tracy, also survive.
