He graduated from Andress High School in 1973 and went on to serve in the U.S. Army. After leaving the military, he worked for U.S. Customs, Colorado State Penitentiary, where he served on the SORT Team; upon returning to El Paso, he worked for Southwest Airlines for fifteen years.
