AUGUSTA -- Virginia L. Albert, 84, of Augusta, died on Monday, Aug. 14, 2006, of complications, after having had pneumonia. Born in Augusta on March 31,1922, to Elsie M. Peavey and William W. Peavey, she was the eldest of five children. Her early life was spent in Augusta, and at the age of eight, she started cooking and helping keep house for her siblings. As a child of the Depression, she was forced to leave high school after her Junior year in order to earn money to purchase school clothes. When she returned to high school, she graduated as class valedictorian. Her passionate interest in history, emanated from her father's role in the silent movies of the 1920s, which were filmed in Augusta, and her family's connection to the Howard's of Fort Western.
Virginia enjoyed a varied and interesting work life, culminating in her being the Innkeeper of the Old Tavern Inn, Litchfield, which she enjoyed immensely, and which she pursued into her seventies. Many people will remember attending events at the Inn. Her career included secretarial work at Downing Insurance Agency and the Maine State Department of Education. She also enthusiastically worked to support the efforts of the War Powers Act during the Second World War.
With her husband, Henry Albert, she worked to help establish their contracting business. In the 1960s, they moved to Washington D. C. so her husband could work in the Washington Office of Congressman Stanley R. Tupper. She was involved in work for the Offices of Nelson Rockefeller and other political figures.
She had a lifelong interest in intellectual pursuits, including Literature, the Arts, political life, and the environment.
Virginia was predeceased by her siblings: Helen Barreto of Augusta; Marjorie Shockley of New Hampshire; and Morrill Peavey of Framingham, Mass.; and her sister-in-law, An Peavey of Cupertino, Calif. She is survived by her brother, William Peavey, of Cupertino, Calif. In addition, she was predeceased by her first husband, Kenneth E. Bertrand, with whom she had a son, Kenneth D. Bertrand. Ken and his wife Darlene Bertrand reside in Palm Springs and Anza, Calif. With her second husband, Henry R. Albert, she had five children: Linda J. Albert and her husband Rocco La Penta of Freeport; Cynthia A. Albert, DVM, of Old Orchard Beach; and Franklin H. Albert of Augusta. Her daughter, Jacqueline A. Albert, died shortly after birth. James Albert of Augusta is her step-son.
Virginia has one granddaughter, Laura Burden, and husband, Ethan Shames, of Portland. Virginia has four step grandchildren, Ronald and Thomas Kleve and Joni Dennis, all of California, and Jason La Penta of Waltham, Massachusetts. There are three great-grandchildren, Sebastian, Griffin, and Isabella Shames of Portland. A special friend of Virginia, Diane Dupuis, of Augusta, and a favorite niece, Bonnie Johnson of Augusta survive her. Several cousins, nieces, and nephews are surviving.
Her family will particularly miss her loving concern, her gracious manner, her joie de vivre, and her blueberry muffins.
A celebration of her life will be held at the Batchelder's Inn, formerly Old Tavern Inn, Litchfield, on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2006, at 6 p.m. Burial will take place later at Mount Hope Cemetery, Augusta.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Ramon Cheleuitte, the Staff at the Woodlands of Hallowell, the Staffs of the Kennebec Valley Medical Center, and the Augusta Rehabilitation Center for their care of Virginia.
