US Congressman, Vermont Governor. Elected to represent Vermont in the United States House of Representaives, he served from 1961 to 1971. A native of Rutland, Vermont, Stafford also served as the Vermont State Attorney General from 1955 to 1957, Lieutenant Governor of Vermont from 1957 to 1959, Governor of Vermont from 1959 to 1961, and as a United States Senator from Vermont from 1971 until his retirement in 1989. He also served in the United States Navy in both World War II, and the Korean War. A noted lawyer, Stafford was also known as a staunch environmentalist and a champion of education.
