Monarch of legend. Also Bern and Bero. Legendary king of what is now Sweden. Swedish also: Björn at Haugi. According to Hervarar saga he was a Swedish king and the son of Erik Björnsson, and Björn ruled together in diarchy with his brother Anwynd Upsale. The account dates king Beorn to the first half of the 9th century, as his nephew Eric was the contemporary of King Harold I Fairhair of Norway. Landnámabók mentions a Swede named Þórðr knappr who was one of the first settlers in Iceland and whose father was called Beorn at Haugi. Moreover, Beorn and his court skald Bragi the Old are mentioned also in Skáldatal, where a second court skald also is mentioned, Erpr lútandi. Details of the legends and histories of this man and of Beorn II have been so intermixed in several accounts, that is can be hard to distinguish between them as two distinct indivuals. What speaks for their being so is the two different tumuli, located in different areas and both attributed to a contemporary King Beorn. A confirmation on the historicity of King Beorn at Haugi is found in Rimbert's (d. 888) Vita Ansgarii, where he talks of a king Beorn (rex Bern) and says on Ansgar's voyage in 827: "Tandem ad portum regni ipsorum, qui Byrca dicitur, pervenerunt, ubi benigne a rege, qui Bern vocabatur, suscepti sunt". This king Beorn is generally considered to be the same as Beorn at Haugi and this according to Langebek who lived in the mid-18th century. Some scholars have called this Bern "king of Birca (Birchey)", but this has no foundation in Rimbert's writings, as Rimbert writes that Ansgar went ashore in Birca, which was in King Beorn's kingdom. During Ansgar's visits there was also a Swedish King Anwynd who had been exiled but returned with Danish help, and this Anoundus has been identified the same as Beorn's brother Anwynd Upsale, who is mentioned in Hervarar saga.
