When he was a child, Mr. Kohne came from Germany to Indiana. He attended school there, became certified as a teacher, and taught school there for two years. He traveled around the country and finally located on Whidbey Island in 1877. He was elected county commissioner in 1890, after which he became postmaster.

On November 17, 1881 he married Clothilde Magdaline Jenne. They had two daughters, Alice who died young and Mrs. Madeline Pratt of Coupeville who survived him.
