Born in Los Angeles, Russell began his career at the age of seven in a 1959 episode of the TV series "Lawman" and followed this with credits in such programs as "Wanted: Dead or Alive", "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" and "Tales of Wells Fargo". He made his motion picture debut with a small role in the Disney picture "Babes in Toyland" (1961) and had further credits with "Safe at Home!" (1962), "The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm" (1962) and "A Ticklish Affair" (1963). His older sister Jeannie Russell was known for playing 'Margaret' in the TV series "Dennis the Menace".
