He had been ill for three weeks prior to Friday, March 18, when, about noon, he was found on the floor in his house by a neighbour. He was removed to the Auckland Hospital and died on Sunday. Dr. Walter Gilmour, pathologist at the Auckland Hospital, who made a post-mortem examination, was unable to determine the cause of death without a microscopical examination, which extended over three days.
The inquest was adjourned.
