John came to Canada with his parents and settled in Markham Township. He married Margaret Brown and raised a family there. In the spring of 1852, John, age 46, and his three grown sons, William, James and John Jr., made their way from Muddy York, Markham Township to the newly surveyed Elderslie Township. They staked out a claim on one thousand acres lots 3-7 on both sides of the 10th of Elderslie. The following June they returned and helped to brush out the tenth of Elderslie from the Elora Road to the fifteen sideroad.
John Sr. settled on lot 6, concession 10, built a house and began to clear the land. He remained for twenty years. In 1872, he sold one acre of the farm to be used as a cemetery in conjunction with the Baptist Church at Williscroft. There had been burials there as early as 1854. It is still called Rusk's Cemetery although there are no Rusks buried there.
Early in 1871 he moved with the younger members of his family to Southampton. John and his son Irwin were in partnership in a hardware store when the great fire in Southampton burned them out. John died five years before his wife and Margaret made her home among her family. Margaret Brown Rusk died in 1894 age 83. Both were brought back to Salem to be buried. Since they were Presbyterians they were not buried in Rusk's Cemetery.
