Richard Lee Smith was a Vietnam War Veteran. He was a Lieutenant with the US Marines and was a fighter pilot who flew numerous combat missing out of Danang. In 1968 he was reassigned to began a short-term assignment coordinating Marine fighter-bombers and ordering air strikes to protect Marine Infantry units who were trapped at the Khe Sanh Combat base. He was wounded when he left the safety of his bunker to rescue wounded fellow marines. He received the silver star and two purple hearts for his actions. He retired from the US Marine Corps in 1974 Richard Smith was survived by his wife, eight children and nine grandchildren.
