Folsom's prison's oldest inmate - Herman Gallagher, 87 - is dead today.
Gallagher, committed from Sutter County in 1899, spent 36 years behind the bars which harbor California's most hardened criminals.
Various complications necessitated his confinement for the past 9 years in the prison hospital, and were the eventual cause of death.
He served a San Quentin term in 1890, and was sent to Folsom on a second conviction for assault to commit murder.
