Mark George Ricks, 92 of Rexburg, passed away Thursday, September 29, 2016 in his hometown of Rexburg, Idaho due to natural causes.

Mark was born July 4, 1924 in Rexburg, Idaho to Peter Jeppesen Ricks and Emily Elizabeth Arnold Ricks. He attended Cedar Point Grade School, Madison Jr. High, and graduated from Madison High School, where he played on the football team. He continued his education at Ricks College, played on the basketball team, and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree. On August 9, 1944, he married his sweetheart, Evelyn Tonks, in the Logan LDS Temple; they were blessed with 2 daughters and 7 sons.

Mark farmed in the Rexburg area throughout his life and enjoyed fishing in his spare time. He took great interest in his community and served as a State Senator in the Idaho State Legislature for 16 years. He contributed a great amount to Idaho as he served as Senate Majority Leader, chairman of the State Affairs Committee, and as a member of the Joint Finance and Appropriations Committee, and served as Idaho Lieutenant Governor for 6 months. He also participated in the Boy Scouts of America, and in 1998 he earned the Silver Beaver Award. As an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints he served in many capacities including: a 2-year mission to Northern California, as a Bishop for 6 years, a Stake President for 6 years during the Teton Dam flood, and as a Regional Representative for 6 ½ years. He enjoyed serving as Director of the Nauvoo Visitor’s Center for 2 years, and an 18-month mission in Salt Lake City at the Missionary Department. Mark also served as President of the Idaho Falls Temple for 3 years.

He is survived by his daughters, Adele (Rocky) Nielsen, of Brigham City, Utah, Kathie (Kermit) Tensmeyer, of Carrollton, Texas, daughter-in-law Alysia Ricks, of Layton, Utah; sons Michael T. (Derena) Ricks, of Rexburg, Idaho, Alan Dee (Samantha) Ricks, of Clayton, California, Glen Leon (Valarie) Ricks of Lindon, Utah, Grant Howard (Camille) Ricks, of Rexburg, Idaho, Douglas T. (Melissa) Ricks; brothers-in-law, Ralph Weatherston, of Rexburg, Idaho, Harvey Fletcher of Provo, Utah; 50 grandchildren 79 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Emily Ricks; wife, Evelyn Ricks; sons, Gary Mark Ricks and Merle Kay Ricks; 1 grandson; 1 great-grandson; and his siblings, Peter Jeppesen (June) Ricks Jr., Lavere Arnold (Lucille) Ricks, Rudger Vernon (Larua) Ricks, Joseph Arnold Ricks, Mary Vivian (William Delore) Atkinson, Beula (Gwyllam) Blaser, and Lorene (Frank) Jenkins.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, October 8, at the Rexburg 19th Ward LDS Chapel, (Burton East Building) 2332 W. 2000 S., Rexburg. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Friday and from 9:30 to 10:45 am Saturday, both at the church. The burial will be in the Sutton Cemetery. Services are under the care of Eckersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby.
