Lynnville, Ia., Elvira Meredith, daughter of Jesse and Luzena Meredith, was born in Henry County, Indiana, on August 18, 1863. she came with her parents to Lynnville, in 1865, where she resided during the greater part of her life. About eight years were lived in Oskaloosa. She died at the home of her daughter in Lynnville, February 18, 1931, after a lingering illness of about three months.

She was united in marriage to I. O. Riley on November 25, 1880. To them were born two children: R.R. Riley of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Mrs. Sybil Renaud of Lynnville.

On April 18, 1895, she was married to Albert Ellis Howerton, whose daughter, Lucretica Elizabeth has been since then as one of her own children. This step-daughter is now Mrs. D.C. Hoffman of Spokane.

Of Mrs. Howerton's own family of brothers and sisters, three survive her: Mrs. Anna Jane Hibbs of New York City, C.D. Meredith of Des Moines, and John Meredith of Poplar Bluffs, Missouri, and a half-sister Mrs. Nora King, two half-brothers, David and Quincy Meredith, all of Corpus Christi, Texas. She leaves also six grandchildren, a number of other relatives, and a host of friends.

Mrs. Howerton was a birthright member of the society of Friends. In her earlier years she was an earnest Sunday School teacher and an active leader in you peoples' work. More recently she has had special interest in the study and work of the Missionary society of the church. In home and church and community she has lived a faithful conscientious and beautiful life.
