He was a German Brigadeführer and Generalmajor in the Waffen-SS, during World War II. He was awarded the Oakleaves to the Knight's Cross for the fighting in the Budapest area. He was seriously wounded during the attempt to break out from Budapest, and committed suicide to prevent his capture by the Soviet Red Army.
