In addition to being a wonderful homemaker, Mrs. Harper was a poet, playwright, songwriter, and piano teacher. Lou married James "Jim" Welch in 1957. They were married for 26 years and were the parents of five children. On November 9, 1983 she and Earl G. Harper were married in Lone Grove, OK.
Mrs. Harper, a resident of Love County most of her life, was a 1957 graduate of Thackerville High School and then taught piano lessons at the school for many years. She was a member of the Poetry Society of Oklahoma, the Southern Oklahoma Writers Guild where she also served as past president, and the Moonlight Writers of Southern Oklahoma. Her writings earned many awards throughout the years. Mrs. Harper was also a member of the Thackerville Baptist Church
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, David Morgan; two granddaughters, Natachia and Amber Welch; and a great-granddaughter, Lillian Horner.
Survivors include her husband, Earl G. Harper of the home; son and daughter-in-law, James Oce and Marcia Welch of Thackerville; four daughters, Deena Welch Young, Jeannie Welch Malloy, Betsy Lou Welch, and Lee Ann Welch, all of Thackerville; sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Frank Wolfe of Midland, TX; 21 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a great-great grandchild; and her pet dog, Cowboy "Gunsmoke."
Serving as casket bearers are David Wilson, Bobby Wilson, Levi Welch, Eli Young, Laiken Wiedmann, and Quinten Krebs. Honorary bearers are members of the Thackerville Class of 1957; Moonlight Writers, Janita Black, Mike Jones, and Carl Clark; and all of her grandchildren.
