J.T. was born October 2, 1924 in Stigler, Oklahoma to Robert and Gladys (Cummings) Barnes. His family moved to Jones in 1930. He began to work on his grandfather's farm, and also learned to weld at a Blacksmith's shop.

He became an ordained minister in 1949 at the age of 25. He dedicated most of his time to the Assembly of God Church in Jones, OK, under Pastor Gregory McCoy, and also the Pentecostal Church in Spencer, OK.

After building up the church congregations, he moved back to Jones in 1960 and worked bi-vocationally as a machinist to support his family and still be able to preach the Lord's Word.
In 1964, he started Barnes Machine and worked until he retired in 1995, but he continued preaching in churches, nursing homes, weddings, funerals, revivals, and to whomever was willing to listen to God's Word.
