ANN OAKES
1927-2016

Ann Murell "Annie" (Bowden) Oakes was born on 08 Jun 1927 in Shreveport, Caddo Parish, Louisiana to Joseph Warren Bowden and Ethel M. (Keith) Bowden. She died on 18 Sep 2016 at the age of 89. She was Valedictorian of her graduating class from Ashdown High School. She was awarded a full academic scholarship to Centenary College. She graduated earning a degree in Elementary Education and Piano. She was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi Society. She began her career of teaching in Little River County, Arkansas, but took a break to raise her children until they were school age.
She, then, took a teaching position with the Caddo Parish Schools teaching first grade at Claiborne Fundamental Elementary until her retirement in 1991.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Shreveport. She was active in many ministires, but her passion was teaching three year olds about Jesus. She taught Preschool Sunday School for more than 50 years. She sang in many choirs. It was at a training union where she met her future husband, Guy, and fell in love. The were married for 41 years.
Ann had a caring heart. She spent many years helping widowed friends. She volunteered to feed the hungry, as well as, the member of FBC. She loved the opportunity to feed her family her traditional meal of beef brisket, green beans, boiled potatoes, corn souffle and some kind of pie for dessert. She enjoyed working in her garden or instructing her yard man on the correct way to mow the grass or sweep pine straw from the roof.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy Oakes Jr.; her parents; and her older brother, Billy Bowden. She is survived by a daughter, a son, three grandchildren, two great-granddaughters, and two sisters-in-law.
