Arvel James Allred, age 100, passed away in Orem, UT, on Friday, September 16, 2016, of causes incident to age.

Arvel was born to James and Edith Hunting Allred on their homestead in Bennett, Utah, on December 31, 1915. After his father died in the flu epidemic of 1918, Arvel’s family continued on the homestead until moving to Vernal in 1937.

Arvel was a heavy equipment operator for Uintah county and other road and construction jobs until opening a service station business in Vernal with his brother Charley.

He married Elva Atwood in 1941 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. The family lived four years in Glenwood Springs, CO, and another ten years in Manti, UT, where Arvel continued in the service station and tire recapping business and again worked in road construction. He and his family returned to Vernal in 1963 where they owned and operated Chuck’s Drive-In until retiring in 1978.

After serving with his wife in the Kentucky Louisville Mission, he was an ordinance worker in the Provo Utah Temple for nine years. He served in the Vernal Temple from its opening in 1997 until 2012, and then continued attending every day until September last year when he moved to Orem. He continued faithfully attending the temple several times a week until recently.

Arvel is remembered for his total commitment to his beloved Elva and their children, sharing his bountiful garden harvest, and serving diligently as a friend and neighbor and in whatever calling he received in the LDS Church, as well as his legendary temple service.

Arvel is survived by his wife of more than 75 years, Elva, and four of their five children—Peggy Strate (Lindon), Kenneth and Dixie Allred (Mt. Pleasant), Ann Hunger (West Valley City), and Ellen Allred (Orem); 21 grandchildren, 69 great and 17 great-great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings—Claud, Jennie Haslem, Afton, and Charley; son Roger Allred, son-in-law Kenneth Strate and daughter-in-law Joan Allred, one grandson, one great-grandson, and one great-great-grandson.

Funeral services will be Saturday, September 24, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the Vernal 9th Ward, 250 N 200 W, Vernal, UT.

Visitation will be Friday, September 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Ashley Valley Funeral Home, 410 N 800 W, and on Saturday from 9:45 to 10:45 at the church.

Interment will be in the Rock Point Cemetery under the direction of Ashley Valley Funeral Home.
