PASSED AWA¥ YESTERDAY MORNING.

He Fell Asleep. Peacefully and Quietly, at Capt. Alexander's - Sketch of His Life - The Funeral.


Dr. William J. Hayes died yesterday morning at 1 o’clock at the home of Captain S. B. Alexander, two miles west of the city.

News of his death was a great shock to his many friends, as few knew of his illness. He had had been suffering with indigestion for some time, but his condition was not considered serious. He had a severe attack Thursday evening, but rallied and retired at the usual hour.

At a few minutes before 1 o’clock Mrs. Hayes was awakened by his peculiar breathing, and becoming alarmed, called Captain Alexander, who hastened to his bedside and in a few minutes the came. Peacefully as one falling asleep he passed away.The remains were brought to the residence of Miss Sophia Alexander, on West Trade street, yesterday morning at 11 o’clock.

The funeral service will be conducted from there this morning at 11 o’clock by Rev. Dr. Howerton. The following will act as pall-bearers: Major James G. Harris, and Messrs. M. L. Harris, Henry H. McGinn, J. S. Phillips, Alexander Graham and A. J. Beall. The elders of the First Presbyterian church will act as honorary pall-bearers.

Mr. Montrose Hayes will be here this morning, also Dr. Adams and the Misses Adams, of Gastonia, to attend the funeral.

BIOGRAPHICAL
William James Hayes was born at Moore's Ferry,, Gaston County, January 7th, 1821, and was therefore 77 years of age. He was a son of John Hayes and Cathering Johnston. His mother was a sister of colnel Robert and Dr. William Johnston. The former was the father of Colonel William and Dr. L. X. Johnston, the latter the father of Governor Jos. F. Johnston, of Alabama, and Captain James F. and Roberrt D. Johnston, of Birmingham. Dr. Hayes lived his early education in this and native county, and entering the State University in 1840, he graduated in 1844 in a class with General Rufus Barringer, Dr. J. J. Summerell, of Salisbury; Dr. Harris, of Wilmington, and others. Dr. Harris is now the only living number of the class.

He entered the Philadelphia College of Physicians and Surgeons in the fall of 1844 and graduated two years later. He only practiced a short time, as he had to attend to his father’s estate. He was married August 25th, 1847, to Miss Isabella L. Alexander, of this county. They celebrated their golden wedding last August at Captain S. B. Alexander's.

Dr. Hayes was a life-long and devoted member of the Presbyterian Church. He served the Church at Unity and Paw Creek as elder tot years. He was a man of ability; gentle and retiring; ofqulet, dignified demeanor; with malice toward none and possessing the friendship of all. He died as he had lived — quietly, gently, peacefully.

Mrs. Hayes and one son, Mr. James Hayes, survive him.
