English Royalist. The son of Sir John Ashburnham, he served as a devoted enthusiast and aide to King Charles I and King Charles II as groom of the bedchamber. He collaborated with King Charles I, in 1646, in his escape from Oxford and again in 1648 when he escaped from Hampton Court Palace. As a result the Commonwealth authorities imprisoned him in the Tower of London and three times repatriated him to the Channel Islands. He was treasurer of the Royal Army during the English Civil War and after the Restoration, served King Charles II as a diplomat.
