He married Edith Hussey and they had 13 children. Of those were: Lloyd, Kenziah, Ann, Moses, Hannah, Margaret, John Jr., Elizabeth, Asahel, Isaac and Edward. They sold the family business after the death of his father, for about $55,000. He spent his days, hunting, fishing and riding horses with his children on their large farm of approx. 8 miles of land. He eventually moved into the city and built a home at the end of Fourth Street. At one time, he served as treasurer of Muskingham Co, and also donated land for a cemetery for the community in 1810 and 1849.

Died in this city at 7 o'clock Tuesday morning, in the 86th year of his age, John Dillon. Mr. Dillon was one of the pioneers of Ohio, having lived in this county for over a century. For most of this time, he was engaged in the Licking Iron Works near this city. He was a well-known and highly esteemed citizen, an enterprising patron of most all our private and public improvements. The friends of the deceased are respectfully invited to attend the funeral, Saturday morning at 9 o'clock from the residence of Mrs. Moorehead of North Fourth street.
