Josepha was a tall and stunning woman who dared to wear jeans in downtown Nyack to the dismay of her husband. After giving birth to 7 children, and in later years, she was still the essence of and admired for her natural elegance.

According to the 1930 US Census the couple was renting at Piermont Avenue in Piermont Village. Josepha was listed as Josephine! They had a servant, Anna Selah, age 18.

Before the outbreak of WWII the couple treated themselves to a cruise to the West Indies on the luxurious S.S. Columbus (which may come as no surprise since her husband's maternal grandfather had been born in Havana, Cuba, and was a Spanish citizen before being naturalized in the U.S.).

By the time of the 1940 US Census the entire family was living in a house they owned worth $12,000 in Piermont Village, Rockland County, New York. The property may have previously belonged to Josepha's father-in-law, who had died in 1937. Grandchilden recall a huge, old house between 165 and 175 South Tweed Boulevard with a view of the Hudson. The dwelling later burned to the ground. Fortunately the couple had already moved to their newly built home at 275 Germonds Road in West Nyack around 1961.

Josepha was a devout Catholic and encouraged others to make the sign of the cross should evil be encountered. She was a member of the Altar Society of St. John's R.C. Church, Piermont for more than 20 years. She was a loving grandmother to those 17 of her 20 grandchildren born before her untimely death in 1963, though never hesitant to speak her mind when the young seemed selfish. She suffered from a brain tumor for six weeks which shortened her life far too early. She was survived by six of her seven children und by all four of her older sisters.

Rev. Thomas F. Connelly, pastor of St. John's R.C. Church, Piermont, celebrated a requiem mass at St. Catherine's R.C. Church, Blauvelt, at 10 a.m. on January 15th. The family received friends at the Stevenson Funeral Home.

"My wild Irish Rose, the sweetest flower that grows. You may search everywhere, but none can compare with my wild Irish Rose. My wild Irish Rose, the dearest flower that grows, and some day for my sake, she may let me take the bloom from my wild Irish Rose."
