Her father Jan (John) Anema and her mother Froukje Eerdmans emigrated in 1906 resp. 1907 from the Dutch northern province Friesland to the USA and married in 1907 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

They moved to the Dutch agrarian settlement of Harrison, located in the southeastern part of South Dakota, USA, where Dirkje aka Della was born on December 11, 1908 and her sister Sietske (Susan) on February 12, 1911.
Dirkje was named for her maternal grandmother, Dirkje Pars.

In 1911 the Anema and Tiemstra families moved to the city of Edmonton, the capital of the Canadian province Alberta. Her sister Katharina (Tena) was born there on March 3, 1913.

In 1914 the family Anema moved to the Dutch agrarian settlement of Neerlandia, located about 60 miles northwest of Edmonton, where they bought in January 1913 a quarter (160 acres) of land.

On January 20, 1919 her only brother Gorrit (George) was born in Neerlandia and on June 4, 1921 sister Anna.

Della and Susie were milking cows and doing other chores by age eight or nine. They also would go on horseback to get the cows, which had to be driven to the slough for water. When the girls were older they also had to help with the cutting of the wood in the winter. They helped with ploughing, harrowing (eggen), and stooking, and there was also a large garden to be weeded and piles of wood to be chopped. Della and Susie were also school janitors for some years. Della went out working in Neerlandia and Edmonton.

On December 26, 1925 and October 8, 1928 two more sisters were born in Neerlandia, Froukje (Frances) and Sophie.

On September 23, 1934 Della Anema married in Neerlandia at the age of 25 years the 17 years older Raymond Baker, who had Dutch parents too. Soon hereafter Raymond's parents retired and he took over their quarter, and the newlyweds moved into their house.

They had in Neerlandia the following five children:
* Florence, August 8, 1935;
* Catherine, November 3, 1936;
* John, May 27, 1938;
* Gilbert, February 9, 1940;
* Dorothy, September 4, 1941.

Her husband Raymond Baker died in January 1944 in Neerlandia suddenly of a heart failure at the age of about 53 years. Widow Della died in May 1993 at the age of 84 years.
