James Nicholas Ellis, Jr., a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed into Glory Tuesday morning after a brief stay at the Beacon House in Greensboro. Jim was a World War II veteran, minor league baseball player, beach bum, fisherman, avid golfer, king of the 'long white Cadillac', ice cream connoisseur and avid BRAVES fan!

Jim was born in Rockingham County, NC to Annie Land and James Nicholas Ellis, Sr. He graduated from Bessemer School. From 1942-1946, he served in the Armed Guard, a service branch of the U.S. Navy, which was responsible for defending merchant ships during World War II. He attended Guilford College, Columbia Bible College, and Southeastern Seminary. He played in the Coastal Plains Baseball League from 1947 to 1949. Jim joined Home Life of New York as a life underwriter in January 1951. His most valued mission was leading people to faith in Jesus Christ as he was devout follower of Christ and took every opportunity to share his faith. He was the pastor at Gethsemane Baptist Church 1969-1972, and a supply pastor in many churches throughout North and South Carolina over the years.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Vail Hope Ellis. His sisters: Faye Ellis Briggs of Glendora, CA and Desiree Ellis of Marshfield, WI. His children: Vail Allen Covington (Milton) of Gibsonville, NC; James Nicholas Ellis, III (JoEllen)of Powder Springs, GA; Kathy Ellis Smith (Steven) of Marietta, GA; Cam Ellis Solms (John) of Atlanta, GA and June Ellis Curlott (Joe) of Greensboro, NC. His great-grandchildren: Reid and Ellis Covington, Stetson and Savannah Remole, Brody Smith, Bailey May, Will, Nate and Tommy Bryan.

While his family mourns the loss, they celebrate knowing that he was welcomed by Jesus into the best celebration imaginable.
