Mrs. Akins was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and the Eastern Star. She was a licensed and certified vocational rehabilitator with the State of Louisiana serving as district supervisor. She provided over 33 years of service in vocational rehabilitation. She was a member of the workforce investment board for Morehouse and Union parishes.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Frederick Akins; and her father, Quinon McGowen.
She was survived by her mother, Anna Valentine McGowen of Monroe; two brothers, Glenn McGowen and Mark McGowen, both of Monroe; one sister, Margie Moden and husband John of Monroe; an aunt, Frances Valentine Smith; 7 nieces and nephews.
