Spars of Sioux Falls passed away September 9, 2016 after suffering from kidney failure.

James was born April 9, 1937 in Sioux Falls to William and Engratia (Bender). James was the youngest of four sons.

After graduating from Washington High School in 1955, James spent four years in the U.S. Coast Guard. James enjoyed his time in the Coast Guard and especially his time in the state of Maine. His love of lighthouses and the delights of the state remained with him.

After he returned to South Dakota, he worked at Morrell's for over 25 years and joined the U.S. Naval Reserve were he proudly served in the Seabees unit until retiring in 1988. He married Nancy Schmidt in 1962. They had two children: a son Curtis and a daughter Stephanie.

An unconventional sort, James had a good sense of humor and an amazing memory. He was an avid collector of stamps and coins and his love of history knew no bounds. James was finally able to travel to Europe and experience so many of the places that he had only read about. He also loved cats - in addition to his own he would also care for the neighborhood cats.

He is survived by his daughter Stephanie of Vermillion, S.D.; brothers Wayne and Gordon of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Byron of Mill Valley, C.A. He was preceded in death by his son, Curtis, and his parents. He will be missed.

Funeral service will be 2:00pm Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at Heritage Funeral Home with interment at Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00pm Monday, September 12, 2016 at Heritage Funeral Home.
