On September 2, 2016, Joe Collis Miles, Sr., went to be with his Lord and Savior, after a brief illness.

Joe was born in Austin, Texas, to Cloister and Irene Miles. He attended Fulmore, Allan Jr. High, and Austin High. He was a two-sport athlete in high school, and attended Baylor University on a dual scholarship. During high school, Joe joined the Marine Reserves, and was called to active duty in 1951. He served a total of 16 months and attained the rank of Sergeant.

On August 23, 1952, Joe married the love of his life, Barbara Ann Davis. After receiving an Honorable Discharge from the Marines, Joe returned to Baylor to complete his final two years, and graduated in 1954 with a B.S. degree in Physical Education and Health. Following his graduation, Joe held several jobs in his early years - he worked at his Dad's hardware store, sold cars and insurance, and worked for Magnolia Petroleum. But in 1966, Joe fulfilled a lifelong dream of becoming a coach. Joe coached at Johnston HS and Crockett HS, and retired from AISD after teaching and coaching for 26 years. In his retirement, he and Barbara enjoyed traveling to all parts of the world, playing golf on some of the best courses you could find, and following the activities and achievements of their grandchildren.

Music was always an important part of Joe's life. He directed the music in a number of churches in Austin - Windsor Park, Kinney Avenue, South First and Congress Avenue. In addition to the churches where Joe lead the music, Joe and Barbara were members of Hyde Park Baptist for 30 years, and had recently become members of Austin Baptist Church. They both were members of their church choirs; Joe was a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He and Barbara were also known for the great programs that they would do at various functions throughout the years.

Joe was predeceased by his parents, Cloister and Irene Miles, his son, Joe Miles, Jr., sister, Linda Kay Shaw, parents-in-law, Oakley and Nollie Davis; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Wilton and Eddye Davis; brother-in-law, Earl Dillard; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Joe is survived by his wife of 64 years, Barbara; son, Art Miles and wife, Joani; daughter, Tracy Todd and husband Tim; daughter-in-law, Beth Miles; Grandchildren - Emily Rogers and husband, Blane; Michael Miles and girlfriend, Sara Roberts; Jessica Hatley and husband, Reed; Alyson Weaver and husband Rob; Garrett Miles and wife, Summer; Erin Newman and husband, Alex; Ashley Danks and husband, Jordan; and Jacob Todd; Great-Grandchildren - Sidney, Miles, Ava and Ellis Weaver; Travis and Lotte Newman; Caden, Dane, and Cameron Miles; Brady, Lila and Reese Rogers; Harper Hatley; and Cooper and Caleb Danks; sister-in-law, Pat Dillard; special friends, Sid and Marlene Rich; and many cousins and friends, all of whom he loved deeply.

A Memorial Service honoring Joe's life will begin at 1:00 p.m., on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at the Austin Baptist Church, 7016 Ribelin Ranch Road, Austin, TX 78750.

Joe will be laid to rest in a private family service at Cook-Walden Memorial Hill Cemetery. Please visit Joe's memorial site at www.cookwaldencapitalparks.com - See more at: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/statesman/obituary.aspx?n=joe-collis-miles&pid=181346847&#sthash.M34pwv2O.dpuf
