Hugh Lawson White "Lawson" Hill was married to Euphemia Ann Hill. Lawson was born to Elenor Hyman Morgan and Ervin Hill of Warren County, Tennessee. His wife Euphemia was the daughter of Cornelia Smart and Jesse Pleasant Hill of Warren County, Tennessee, Lawson and Euphemia were first cousins.

Lawson and his wife established, The Hill ranch in 1855, close to the town of what was originally called Limerick, By 1849 it was renamed Camanche. Lawson arrived in California with his wife and young son Jesse along with his brother in law Pleasant H. Hill. The children born to he and his wife were: Jesse Jerome Hill, born in 1850 Arkansas; John H. Hill, born in 1855 in California; and Francis Irving Hill,born in 1857 in California.

Lawson Hill was murdered in 1861.

He was killed by a gunshot wound to the heart by a sharecropper named Marion Tate who Hill had accused of having an affair with Hill's wife and of taking her to the courthouse to file for divorce. Euphremia Hill had filed for divorce the day her husband was killed but Tate had not taken her to file, another neighbor had. Hill was drunk and brandishing a pistol and confronted Tate, who shot him.

Note from Army Corp of Engineers on removal of bodies from cemeteries that would be covered by the water of Comanche Lake: Hill, H. L. W: Aged 35 years. California Pioneer reinterred from Poverty Bar Cemetery. Remains reintered to family plot at Lodi Memorial Cemetery, Lodi, CA., Oct 1962 with Tag Number 119. Mr. Hill's monument was repaired and reset at the Pioneer Cemetery. "Remember me as you pass by, as you are now, so once was I. As I am now, you soon will be, prepare for death and follow me." His remains were reinterred from Poverty Bar, Camanche to the family plot at Lodi Memorial Cemetery. Tag Number 119.
This makes it clear that only his monument is in the Pioneer Cemetery and his remains are in the family plot in Lodi.
