Joan Weatherly Bryant, 82, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, Sept. 2, 2016, at Robin Run Health Care Center Indianapolis, following an extended illness.
She was born April 1, 1934, in Anderson, the daughter of Isaac C. and Gertie (Eckert) Weatherly. She resided in Anderson until 1955 at which time she married Brandon L. Bryant and moved to Indianapolis. Out of this union, they were blessed with two children, Sandy and David.
Joan attended Anderson Public Schools and graduated from Anderson High School in 1952 having chosen home economics as her major course of study. She entered the workforce as a Military Pay Clerk for the U.S. Army Finance and Accounting Center. After many years of employment, she left the Finance Center to become Financial Officer for Radio Station WIFE. Shortly thereafter, she began her tenure with Radio Station WTLC as their accountant from where she later retired. She was then summoned out of retirement by her brother, Charles, as Accountant for "Weatherly Tours."
Joan was baptized at Wallace Temple A.M.E. Zion Church, Anderson. Following her marriage, she later joined Jones Tabernacle A.M.E. Zion Church of Indianapolis where she continued her Christian Walk. She served in many capacities including the Usher Board, Women's Home and Overseas Missionary Society, and was director of the Jr. Usher Board. She volunteered her time and energy to the Church's "Helen's" Clothes Closet and Food Pantry.
Her greatest joy was giving, sharing, and caring for her family. She nurtured and provided for her children ... and taught them many Christian values. Joan's motto was "If I can help somebody along the way, then my living shall not be in vain." Family gatherings were very special to her. She was blessed with unbelievable cooking skills. Her specialty was baking pies and cakes, however, family get-togethers were not complete without her signature dish, potato salad, that no one could duplicate.
Joan was a Charter Member of the "Deca Links" Club of Indianapolis. The members met regularly and carried out a social and civic agenda. They granted academic scholarships and sponsored many community projects. They also enjoyed a variety of travel and fun-filed ventures. Most Friday evenings, Joan would enjoy playing Bid Whist and Bingo with her friends. As Joan's health was failing, she continued to enjoy playing Bingo, doing crafts and enjoying lunch with her friends at Robin Run, especially, Susie. She kept the faith until God called her home.
Joan's passing creates a great loss. She will be greatly missed by her two devoted children, Sandra Kay (Michael) Johnson and David Michael Bryant Sr.; her grandchildren, Danielle (Cory)Pimpton, Alivia Johnson, David Bryant Jr., Lauren Johnson, Patrick Bryant, and Michael Johnson II; stepgrandchildren, Dwayne Harris, Shaphir Gee, and Phylicia Gee; great grandchildren, Alauna, Averey and Avalyn Pimpton, Kendrick and Kynedi Bryant, and Michael Johnson III; sisters, Mary Jane Newsom, Shirley Weatherly and Carolyn Scott; sisters-in-law, Frances Weatherly and Barbara Bryant; brothers-in-law, Charles Robertson and Gregory Scott; special cousins, Betty Weatherly-Parker, Lena Mae Slay and Jackie Wingfield; many nieces and nephews; and Deca Links, Blanche Prather and Chris Wade.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Brandon L. Bryant; parents, the Rev. Isaac and Gertie Weatherly; mother and father-in-law, Thomas and Eva Bryant; brothers, Robert, Isaac "Ike" Jr., and Charles Weatherly; sister, Patricia Robertson; sisters-in-law, Ollie Weatherly, Mary Northington and Ramona Young; brothers-in-law, Frank Newsom, James and Thomas Bryant; nephews, Joshua and Elijah Scott, and Robert James Weatherly.
