Peter LeRoy (Pete) Carlston died in Salt Lake City, April 27, 1992, following a brief illness.

Born February 3, 1911, to John Oscar and Jeanette DeWitt Carlston in Fairview, Utah. Attended Salt Lake's East High School where he was football team captain and awarded the District's Richmond Gold Medal for outstanding scholastic, athletic, and leadership achievement. Pete majored in Education at the University of Utah, where he played football and was All-Conference End. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, as well as Skull and Bones, and Owl and Key Scholastic/Athletic honorary societies. He coached championship football and basketball teams at Delta and Park City High Schools, Westminster College, and Mesa Junior College (Grand Junction, Colorado). He served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theatre, retiring with the rank of Commander.

During Pete's 32-year career at the University of Utah he coached basketball, swimming, golf, baseball, football and track. His teams won many conference championships and attained national rankings. Pete received the U. of U. Emeritus Club Merit Honor Award and was inducted into the East High School and the U. of U. Crimson Club Halls of Fame.

Pete also had a lifelong interest in younger men and women. He taught children's swimming classes at the University for many years. He started the Ute Swim School, the Dolphin Swim Club, the Pete Carlston Sports School, and the Pete Carlston Ski School. Over a period of 38 years thousands of children learned sportsmanship and athletic fundamentals through his schools and classes.

Pete was a Master Blue Lodge Mason, Mt. Moriah Lodge #2, F. & A.M.; member of the York Rite, Utah Commandery #1 Knights Templar; a 32nd degree Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Mason; and a member of El Kalah Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S., where he was active in the Chanters and the Royal Order of Jesters. Pete was a member of the Fort Douglas-Hidden Valley Country Club, and the Gyro Club of Salt Lake City.

He was a parishoner of the Cathedral Church of St. Mark.

Survived by: His wife, Eleanor; sons, Peter Gerald (Kristy), Jan Fraser (Eloise), daughter, Eleanor Jane Staplin (Dale); grandchildren, Jennifer Diane and Jean Marie Carlston, George and John Staplin; brother, Mont (Doris); sister, Yvonne Fiehn, both of El Cerrito, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

Family will greet friends at Evans & Early Mortuary, 574 East 100 South, Wednesday, April 29, from 7-8 p.m. Services will be 12 noon, Thursday, April 30, at the Cathedral Church of St. Mark, 231 East 100 South. Burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Friends wishing may contribute to Intermountain Unit, Shriners' Hospital for Crippled Children.
