Emmett Melford "Mel" Stephens October 5, 1925 - January 27, 2004 COLUMBUS, GA - Emmett Melford "Mel" Stephens, 78, of Columbus, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, at Columbus Hospice House. Graveside funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday in Parkhill Cemetery with Dr. Gilbert Ramsey, Dr. Edwin Cliburn and Dr. Hal Brady officiating, according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary Macon Road Chapel. The family will receive friends this evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Stephens was born Oct. 5, 1925 in Columbus, son of John Emmett and Amy Lucius Jones Stephens. A U.S. Army World War II veteran, he was employed as General Manager with Jordan Supply Company, Vice President at the Jordan Company and President of Muscogee Lumber Company. He was President and Owner of Mel Stephens Builder. Mr. Stephens was a member for over 50 years at St. Luke Methodist Church where he was a member of the Shaw Fellowship Class. Mr. Stephens was a charter member of the Sertoma Club and was a member of the East Columbus Rotary Club with 27 years of perfect attendance. He served as the former President of Columbus Homebuilders Association, and served on the board of the Georgia State Homebuilders Association. Survivors include his wife, Juanita "Nita" Stephens of Columbus; a son and daughter-in-law, John Benjamin and Debbie Neely Stephens of Alpharetta, Ga.; two grandchildren, Haley Elizabeth Stephens of Dunwoody and John B. Stephens Jr., of Athens; two brothers, James R. Stephens of Columbus and Ralph H. Stephens of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Elizabeth Rebecca Hale of Columbus.
