It was suggested by a friend of Jim's that if St. Peter needed a break from his duties at the pearly gate, that Jim Uhlinger would be a good stand-in...such were his abilities to welcome the newcomer, be a friend to all and create a warm and comfortable atmosphere for everyone. He had developed these pastoral skills serving churches for nearly 24 years. A good role model for younger ministers, he was very approachable and interested in people. Besides having the gift of oratory and the ability to craft interesting and thoughtful sermons, he was a skilled pastoral counselor.
Always active on the conference level, he was a delegate to several Jurisdictional and General Conferences, as well as to the World Methodist Peace Tour that went to Russia in 1959. Other trips took them to the Far East, New Zealand, Southeast Asia, and to Europe several times.
